I think the Sauf Haus is relatively new to the DC area. I was reading my in-room DC area magazine and saw an advertisement for it. Luckily it was only about a 5 minute walk from my hotel (near DuPont Circle). I have been traveling to Germany since 1997 so have had most of their beers on tap but I always like the ambiance of a German bier garden. They are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of this building (bottom is a Shake shack). The 2nd floor has a bar that over looks Connecticut and 18th street. They have 15 German beers on draft. All the standard German staples like Franziskaner, Hofbrau, Spaten, Erdinger, Weihenstephaner, and Stiegl. They had German sausages, potato pancakes and traditional German pretzels on their food menu.
I grabbed a Franziskaner for my wife and a Spaten Oktoberfest for myself and we watched the rush hour traffic from 18th try to merge onto Connecticut while listening to traditional German polka music. The 3rd floor has another small bar as well as a large rooftop open area arranged like a typical bier garden. It was rainy the day we were there but they have a roof they can close to protect the area.
We just stopped for one while we were headed to The Big Hunt. Good spot if you want a few German beers, sausages and pretzels and are in the DuPont Circle area. Go to www.saufhausdc.com.
