If you have ever been to Porland, you have probably been at a McMenamins pub.  They own more pubs than I can count and also brew their own beer, distill spirits and have their own winery.  There are several “must check-out” McMenamins pubs in Oregon.  I have been to the Kennedy School (renovated elementary school) that has several bars, rooms, restaurant and also rents rooms.  My favorite is Edgefield which is an old asylum east of Portland.  This place is huge and has a brewery, winery, distillery, restaurant, golf course and also has rooms.  I will rate these later on my blog but my experience at these places convinced me to book a room at the Oregon Hotel in McMinville, OR.  I had meetings in the area and booked a “compact queen with private bath”.  They have some “back packer” style rooms with shared baths but I don’t really like to walk down the hall in my underwear in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.  The room was kind of like staying at your grandmothers house but was all I really needed that night because we were going out with customers for dinner.  No TV’s in the room, no desk and not much space to put your stuff in the bathroom but I really had no problem with it because we were downtown, could walk to our dinner spot and they have nice bars on-site.  I have shown some photos of the room I rented for reference.  Since I was alone, this room was sufficient.  Rate was $105/night.  Two people in this room might be a challenge.  The diamond in the rough was the rooftop bar.  The weather was great the day we were there so going to the rooftop and having a couple pints before dinner was great.  I started with the Thundercone IPA because the Hammerhead Pale tap was giving him problems.  This is a McMenamins beer and was pretty good.  Nice hop level and even though I am not usually a big fan of pub brewed beers, this one was pretty good.  I rated it a 3.5/5.0 on untapp’d.  They got the Hammerhead pale Ale tap working so I had one of these after the IPA and it was also surprisingly good.  I also rated this a 3.5/5.0 on Untapp’d.  If you are ever in the area and you want to stay downtown at a location that has a great rooftop bar, decent rooms (clean and more B&B like) then this is a great spot.  There is also a bar downstairs that also serves breakfast, lunch, dinner.  Didn’t drink or eat at this bar but assume it is also very good.  They also have a cellar bar.  These guys definitely have a great recipe for hospitality offer very unique pub experiences in Oregon.  More info on this location can be found at: http://mcmenamins.com/hoteloregon.
